The Snæfellsnes peninsula is situated to the west of Borgarfjörður in the west of Iceland. It has been named Iceland in Miniature, as many national sights can be found in the area, including the Snæfellsjökull volcano, regarded as one of the symbols of Iceland. With its height of 1446m, it is the highest mountain on the peninsula and has a glacier at its peak. "jökull" means "glacier" in the Icelandic language. The volcano can be seen on clear days from Reykjavík, a distance of about 120 km away. The mountain is also known as the setting of the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by the French author Jules Verne. It is one of the main settings in the Laxdœla saga, and was according to this saga the birthplace of the first West Norse member of the Varangian Guard, Bolli Bollasson. Other historical people who lived in the area according to the saga include Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir, Bolli Þorleiksson and Snorri the Goði.

The area surrounding Snæfellsjökull has been designated one of the four National Parks by the government of Iceland. Local fishing villages and small towns on the northern shore of Snæfellsnes include Rif, Ólafsvík, Grundarfjörður, Stykkishólmur and Búðardalur. Near Hellissandur is the tallest structure in Western Europe, the Longwave Radio Mast at Hellissandur. Snaefellsnes Community has recently become the first Green Globe Certified Community in Iceland & Europe and only the 4th in the world. Snaefellsnes Community has been committed to the Green Globe Programme since 2003 and have successfully Benchmarked for the past 5 consecutive years. In June 2008, the Snaefellsnes Community reached certification status as a Green Globe Community.

aus Wikipedia, der freien Enzyklopädie Die Halbinsel Snæfellsnes liegt westlich des Borgarfjörður in Westisland. Sie befindet sich zwischen der Bucht Faxaflói und dem Fjord Breiðafjörður. Sie hat zahlreiche landschaftliche Schönheiten aufzuweisen und man hat sie schon das "Island in Miniatur" genannt, weil sie auf kleinster Fläche alle Reize der großen Insel wiedergibt.
Ca. 7 Mill. Jahre alt oder älter ist das Grundgebirge in Snæfellsnes, d. h. aus der Zeit, als die Plattengrenzen und der aktive Vulkangürtel sich in diesem Gebiet befanden. Die vulkanische Aktivität stoppte auf Snæfellsnes, als die Plattengrenzen sich vor 7 Millionen Jahren verschoben. Aus unbekannten Gründen begann sie aber wieder vor ca. 2 Mill. Jahren.Zuerst gab es Vulkanausbrüche im Vulkansystem Lýsuskarð, das etwa in der Mitte der Halbinsel liegt, und vor 1 Mill. Jahren begannen sich die Snæfellsjökuls- und Ljósufjöllsysteme zu rühren. Das System der Ljósufjöll, das sich am östlichen Ende der Halbinsel befindet, ist mit einer bemerkenswerten Länge von über 90 km eines der längsten aktiven Vulkansysteme auf Island. Es reicht vom Lavafeld Berserkjahraun bei Stykkishólmur über den Schlackenkrater Eldborg im Hnappadalur am Weg von Borgarnes nach Snæfellsnes bis zu den Grábrókkratern bei Bifröst. Die letzten Ausbrüche auf Snæfellsnes waren etwa zur Zeit der Kolonisierung von Island im Hnappadalur.
Eine besondere Sehenswürdigkeit der dünn besiedelten Gegend ist der 1446 m hohe Stratovulkan Snæfellsjökull, dessen Kappe einen Gletscher bildet, aus dem drei kleine Vulkanschlote ragen. Er befindet sich an der äußersten westlichsten Spitze der Halbinsel und ist an klaren Tagen sogar von Reykjavík aus zu sehen, das in Luftlinie ca. 120 km entfernt liegt. Er gilt als einer der berühmtesten Berge der Insel. Dies hat er nicht zuletzt dem französischen Autor Jules Verne zu verdanken, der in seinem Roman "Die Reise zum Mittelpunkt der Erde" den Einstieg in die Unterwelt genau am Snæfellsjökull anlegt. Um ihn herum liegt einer der vier Nationalparks Islands: der Snæfellsjökull-Nationalpark. Er hat zahlreiche gekennzeichnete Wanderwege aufzuweisen, z.B. einen alten Weg die Küste entlang von Dritvík nach Djúpalónssandur.
